December 23 Update

Local COVID-19 Cases

There were 2 reported cases of COVID-19 between December 12th and 18th in the Powell River Local Health Area (includes City of Powell River, qathet Regional District (minus Lasqueti), and Tla’amin Nation). Continue to remain vigilant in hand washing, getting tested if you have symptoms of COVID-19, and stay home if you feel sick. 

Supported Self-Testing Clinic Holiday Schedule

The supported self-testing clinic has adjusted days of operation to accommodate the increased demand for testing. Testing for COVID-19 will be open BY APPOINTMENT ONLY from Monday-Friday throughout the holidays.

The supported self-testing clinic is located on the 3rd floor parking lot behind the Hospital, accessed via Kiwanis Avenue. Please drive up to the orange shipping container and REMAIN IN YOUR VEHICLE.

If you need a test when the clinic is closed, please visit the Emergency Department of the Hospital, and register at the front desk. Wait times in Emergency can be unpredictable, and we appreciate your patience over the busy holiday season!

Provincial Case Counts and Vaccination Rates

As of Thursday, December 23, 2021, 91.8% of eligible people in B.C. 12+ have had their first dose of the COVID-19 vaccination, and 89% have received their second dose.

As of Monday, December 20th, our local vaccination rates were:

  • 90% of adults 50+ have received their first dose
  • 89% of adults 50+ have received their second dose
  • 41% of adults 50+ have received their third dose
  • 80% of adults 18-49 have received their first dose
  • 76% of adults 18-49 have received their second dose
  • 80% of people 12-17 have received their first dose
  • 74% of people 12-17 have received their second dose
  • 28% of children 5-11 have received their first dose

There are currently 8,739 active cases of COVID-19 in B.C. Of these cases, 195 are in hospital and 75 are in intensive care. There are currently 3,729 active cases in the Vancouver Coastal Health region. 496 confirmed cases of the Omicron variant have been confirmed in the Vancouver Coastal Health region.

From December 15-21, people not fully vaccinated accounted for 24.8% of cases and from December 8-21 they accounted for 68.6% of hospitalizations.

Vaccination Clinics

There is one more vaccination clinic in 2021 on December 30th at the Upper Level of the Complex. Walk ins are welcome to receive their 1st or 2nd dose. Booster doses and children 5-11 must be booked for all vaccination clinics. Register and book through the GetVaccinated website https://www.getvaccinated.gov.bc.ca/s/.  

Eligibility for Booster doses will increase in the New Year. We will provide updates as they become available.

As of March 15, Vancouver Coastal Health will be offering a public vaccination site located on the upper level of the Powell River Recreation Complex.
